The Talent Blues – A Parable in Song (Matthew 25: 14-25)
** In The Talent Blues, we explore Jesus' parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), a story filled with rich wisdom on faithfulness, stewardship, and the consequences of using – or hiding – our God-given gifts. In this parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a master who entrusts his servants with talents (a form of currency) before leaving on a journey. Each servant receives a different amount based on their abilities. When the master returns, he celebrates those who multiplied what they received, rewarding their diligence. But to the servant who buried his talent out of fear, the master responds with stern rebuke. This parable teaches us that God expects us to make use of what He has given us, to nurture it, and to bring forth fruit for His kingdom.
Scripture: Matthew 25:14-30 (WEB)
14 "For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants and entrusted his goods to them.
15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey.
16 Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
17 In the same way, he also who got the two gained another two.
18 But he who received the one talent went away and dug in the earth and hid his lord's money.
19 Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and settled accounts with them.
20 He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.'
21 "His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'
22 "He also who got the two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents besides them.'

** Lyrics: The Talent Blues
[Verse 1]
A man went on a journey, left his goods behind,
Gave one five, another two, the last just one to find.
Each man got what he could handle, each gift in their own hand,
Now it's time to see, Lord, what a soul can stand.
[Chorus]
Well done, good and faithful, you've been true all along,
To the least of what I gave you, with every step you were strong.
Enter now my joy, my faithful son,
For to everyone who has, even more will come.
[Verse 2]
The five-talent man, he traded, turned his five into ten,
And the two-talent servant doubled his too, just like him.
But the one-talent man, he dug it in the ground,
Afraid of losing what he had, never made a sound.
[Chorus]
Well done, good and faithful, you've been true all along,
To the least of what I gave you, with every step you were strong.
Enter now my joy, my faithful son,
For to everyone who has, even more will come.
[Verse 3]
Now the master returned, settled up every score,
And the man with one talent trembled by the door.
"I knew you were a hard man, feared to lose your pay,
So I buried it down, in the dirt it would stay."
[Bridge]
"You wicked and lazy servant, you buried what I gave,
Could've left it in the bank, where some interest could be saved.
Take his one, give it to the man with ten to hold,
For from those who have nothing, even that is sold."
[Chorus]
Well done, good and faithful, you've been true all along,
To the least of what I gave you, with every step you were strong.
Enter now my joy, my faithful son,
For to everyone who has, even more will come.
[Verse 4]
In the outer darkness, where regrets grind like stone,
The unfaithful servant found he was all alone.
For the master's gifts are treasures, meant to grow and shine,
To those who walk the faithful path, rewards divine.
[Outro]
Oh, to everyone who has, more and more will grow,
But to those who hide their gifts, even that must go.
So use what you are given, let your talent play,
For the kingdom's joy waits on that faithful day.
