Following the Paleoltihic Period, Japan was populated by a diverse group of cultures collectively known as the Jomon people, the defining feature of the Jomon Period which lasted from 16,000 years ago to around 1000 BCE. This is the story of the Jomon Period, from the rise of the Jomon to the arrival of the Austronesians and the colonization of Korea, culminating in the arrival of a foreign group who will make Japan their own.
