Colorado Buffaloes have witnessed an astounding surge in multimedia rights, nearly doubling their sponsorships compared to the previous year. The game-changer? None other than Deion Sanders, whose arrival in Colorado created ripples across the college football landscape which is called the Prime Effect.
From day one, it was clear that the Hall-of-Famer brought more than just his Louis Vuitton luggage. The numbers speak volumes, with the Buffs achieving a remarkable 51% increase in sponsorship revenue from 2022.
Managed by Learfield, CU's athletic department's multimedia rights are projected to generate a substantial $8.3 million in fiscal 2024, as reported by Sportico. This revenue stems primarily from sponsorships, radio advertisements, digital signage, and other commercial opportunities-a significant uptick from the $5.5 million recorded in fiscal 2023.
Overall, the "Prime Effect" has translated into an estimated $90 million windfall for Colorado. Joe Klatt's foresight proved accurate as Deion Sanders' hiring promised "hundreds of millions" in new revenue for the school, electrifying everything from ticket sales to student applications.
The impact is evident in various revenue streams, including ticket sales and merchandise records, making Colorado Buffaloes-related items highly sought after. Notably, an impressive $700 million was wagered on CU football in 2023.
Coach Prime humorously addressed the financial buzz, revealing, "They said, '700 million dollars were placed on Colorado games last year... 700 million.' I said, 'Can we get a cut?'"
Beyond sports, the University of Colorado at Boulder has reported a record number of applications for the next school year, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. The applicant pool is also the most diverse in the university's history, with a notable 50% increase in applications among African-American and Black students.
