Our content is going to wander into controversy again this week. By controversy, I mean we will be talking about some of the inaccuracies contained within one of the most beloved and time-honored stories the world has ever known. I am speaking of The Christmas Story.

I learned of these inaccuracies quite by accident. I didn’t go looking for them. I had been invited to attend a lecture at the University here in Bologna several years ago and during the course of the talk the subject came up. I remember walking out of the lecture hall feeling both stunned and saddened as well as angry and empty.

We are going to discuss what is probably the more plausible version of the Christmas story...not the nice, pretty, sanitized one the world has come to know and celebrate. All I ask of you is that you hear me out. Keep an open mind and when we’re done, you can evaluate what we’ve discussed and see how or if it affects you. OK?

It’s the story of Jesus of Nazareth’s conception and birth...a story ubiquitous in the western world. This is the story as told in the first two chapters of the gospels of Matthew and Luke. It’s been memorialized in countless songs, paintings and church Christmas pageants. There is only one problem with it...

most of it is made up!
