Dragon Age: The Veilguard Sales Disaster? Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws Leaves BioWare’s Latest in the Dust

A rumor circulating around Dragon Age: The Veilguard suggests it's struggling to keep pace with Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws. According to YouTuber Endymion, insider sources indicate that Dragon Age: The Veilguard only hit around 500,000 copies sold, just half of what Star Wars Outlaws reportedly reached in sales.

From the start, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was already underperforming. Initial pre-order numbers were far below expectations, with Endymion sharing that insiders told him Veilguard only had around 115,000 pre-orders across all platforms. However, those numbers might have been inflated, as the latest insider update claims the true figure could be closer to 70,000-75,000 pre-orders, including both digital and physical copies. For a game of this size and budget, these figures are bleak.

Disappointing Sales, Mass Refunds, and Cancelled Pre-Orders

Things haven’t improved post-launch, either. Not only are sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard hovering around 500,000, but a significant portion of buyers are actively seeking refunds. Endymion reported an insider estimate that around 30,000 refunds have already been processed, indicating substantial dissatisfaction among the player base. Another report highlighted that 14% of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s physical pre-orders at a major U.S. retailer were canceled shortly before release. Breakdown by platform revealed cancellation rates around 14-15% across Deluxe and Normal versions on both PS5 and Xbox, showcasing a lack of confidence in the game.

Adding to the issues, Dragon Age: The Veilguard only peaked at 89,000 concurrent players on Steam during launch, far below BioWare’s projection of 100,000. It dropped by over 26.5% by the following Monday, plummeting to 65,000 players.

No DLC, No Expansions: BioWare Abandons Ship

BioWare’s silence on Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s sales performance stands out in stark contrast to other October releases, like Atlus’s Metaphor: ReFantazio, which hit 1 million units sold within its first 24 hours. Adding salt to the wound, BioWare has announced they won’t be developing any downloadable expansions or additional content for The Veilguard, redirecting their full focus to Mass Effect 5. In the words of Rolling Stone’s George Yang, BioWare has confirmed that “With Dragon Age: The Veilguard now complete, there are currently no plans for downloadable expansions.”
