Florida Mother Sentenced to 30 Years for Kidnapping and the Death of Her Daughter
Pamela Cabrera, a 34-year-old mother from Florida, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter of a child and fleeing law enforcement, resulting in the tragic death of her 5-year-old daughter, Vanity Cabrera. In a plea deal, charges of vehicular homicide, battery on a law enforcement officer, and other related offenses were dropped.
On March 31, 2022, Cabrera, who struggled with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, kidnapped her daughter from her sister’s home, where Vanity had been living after the state took custody due to Cabrera’s mental health issues. Armed with a knife, Cabrera led police on a high-speed chase across 30 miles, running red lights, driving recklessly, and even passing semi-trucks on the shoulder.
The pursuit ended when Cabrera crashed into a retention pond, where she managed to escape but failed to rescue her daughter, who was trapped inside the submerged vehicle. Despite the efforts of officers and a dive team, Vanity's body was later recovered from the pond.
During the sentencing, Cabrera expressed regret in a handwritten letter, apologizing for her actions and stating she had been under mental health treatment for two years and planned to continue her medications to prevent a similar tragedy in the future. Her defense attorney requested a 10-year sentence, citing her ongoing mental health crisis, but Judge Sax imposed the maximum sentence.
