On Nov. 11, Veterans Day we honor all the brave men and women who have served in the United States military. We are reminded of the unwavering courage and dedication of our nation's heroes. Originally called Armistice Day, Hostilities in World War I ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice, or peace agreement. The first celebration referred to as Veterans Day was held in Birmingham, Alabama, on Nov. 11, 1947. In 2016, President Barack Obama signed the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act. At 2:11 p.m. EST each Veterans Day. Our veterans are crucial to life as we know it today because they protect our freedom, provide us with a way to learn about our history and the world around us, and risk their lives for people they have never met. By recognizing and honoring these Veterans, we allow generations of families and friends to understand, appreciate, and have a small glimpse into the sacrifices these fine men and women have given to the United States. Thank you for your service.
