Driver Crashes Into Tree, Car Catches Fire, NEW WILLARD, November 8, 2024 - At approximately 6:15 am on November 8, 2024, the driver of a small car was south-bound on US-59 when the driver left the pavement to the right, proceeded down an embankment and slammed head on into a tree. The impact snapped the tree in half, the car caught fire, the driver was trapped. Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Livingston Volunteer Fire Department, Allegiance Ambulance Service, and Corporal Ramey Bass with the Texas Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene. When deputies arrived they used their fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the fire. The fire was persistent, but law enforcement were able to keep the car from becoming engulfed in flames until the fire department arrived. The fire was extinguished. Volunteer firemen used the Jaws-of-Life to cut the door of the car and save the driver, (Driver's name not yet released). The driver was transported by ambulance to CHI Livingston Memorial Hospital with major injuries. The south-bound lanes of 59 were completely blocked during investigation and cleanup. A rollback wrecker from Kwik Tow out of Livingston was summoned to clean up the mess. This accident remains under investigation with the Texas Highway Patrol.
