🇲🇿🪧 Protests against election results escalate in Mozambique: At least 20 people reportedly died

Mozambique has witnessed a surge of protests following the results of its October 9 presidential election, where incumbent President Daniel Chapo of the ruling FRELIMO party was announced as the victor with 70.67% of the votes.

However, the opposition, led by presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, who has reportedly fled the country, has rejected the results, citing alleged irregularities and calling for a series of strikes and mass demonstrations until what he describes as “electoral truth” is restored.

🕯 Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, report that more than 20 people have died in clashes with police, with hundreds more injured or detained. On Thursday, three protesters were reportedly confirmed dead by the Maputo Central Hospital while 66 others got injured.

☝🏽FRELIMO officials have condemned the ongoing protests, framing them as a threat to national stability and describing them as an “attempted coup.” On state television, FRELIMO spokesperson Alcinda de Abreu expressed concern over calls for continued protests, arguing that such actions promote insubordination and aim to destabilize the government.
