The sight of her unconscious body on the operating table being subject to furious efforts by medical staff to save her life was Vicki Umipeg’s first experience of vision, as she was born blind.

At age 22, thrown out of a car, she’d suffered skull fractures, a concussion, and other severe injuries. Now, looking down at the damaged body through panoramic vision, she recognized it as her own by the distinct wedding ring she had only ever known by touch.

Umipeg’s case is one of 4,000 cases of near-death experience (NDE) researched and reviewed by Dr. Jeffrey Long, who began this work 25 years ago and publishes his findings on the Near-Death Experience Foundation website.

What are the hallmark experiences shared by the majority of those who go through NDE? How do people change after having NDE?

Long, a practicing radiation oncologist in Kentucky, first came across NDE by accident—in a prestigious medical journal while looking for a cancer-related article.

The NDE article he found by chance reported cardiac arrest and coma survivors’ recollections of coming out of their bodies and observing goings on while their bodies were unconscious.

This and the NDE of his friend’s wife during cardiac arrest were the initiating sparks to Long’s investigation into the phenomenon.
