It's A Krull Kruel Cruel Review (Krull 1983)

KRULL is a cross between high fantasy and Star Wars. Riding off the successes of the original STAR WARS trilogy, Star Trek, Excalibur, and Conan the Barbarian, the producers thought combining the elements of science fiction and fantasy would make for a decent movie. Unfortunately at the time people didn’t think it was and it flopped.
Krull was an expensive production for 1980’s especially for a mostly UK production with a budget of $30 million, some say $50 million, but failed at the box office. However its story and set pieces have enabled it to become a cult classic with the possibility of a remake down the road.
The bizarre plot of Krull makes no sense yet it does. Krull would have worked better if we didn’t know the Slayers came from outerspace and kept it as a mostly fantasy story but maybe make the enemy more mysterious and powerful utilizing guns and hi tech weapons instead of whatever the slayers used, but the producers also added nonsense to keep the story going. Prime example is the Widow of Web which served nothing to the plot but to tell Ynyr where the Black Fortress will be.
In addition to wizards, kings, and alien invaders, there is a Cyclops. Thats right a Cyclops who stalks the Professor McGonnical wannabe furry who turns out to be friendly, The effects to pull off the Cyclops was both impressive for its time but has aged horribly at the same time. Apart from fending off Slayers, the Cyclops does nothing much except during the climax where he gets squashed to death.
Perhaps it was bad marketing or maybe the film didn’t interest people but Krull today is a popular its so bad its good movie. Despite its failure, Liam Nesson and Robbie Coltran would go onto successful acting careers. Freddie Jones had a interesting career as a character actor and was in our recently reviewed take on Monte Cristo. But anyway, we here at the Y? Us channel love bizzare and unusual films, so if any can be recommended, we will review. Until next time, like and subscribe, we greatly appreciate it
