Chains Were Loosened – A Blues Song of Redemption | Acts 16:25-34
** In this powerful blues song, Chains Were Loosened, we journey through the dramatic story of the Philippian jailer's conversion in Acts 16:25-34. Late into the night, as Paul and Silas pray and sing hymns to God from their prison cell, an earthquake shakes the foundations of the prison. In an instant, the chains fall from their wrists, and the prison doors fly open. The jailer, overcome by the sight, contemplates ending his life, believing the prisoners have fled. But Paul cries out, "Don't harm yourself, for we are all here!" The jailer, shaken and humbled, falls before Paul and Silas, asking, "What must I do to be saved?" In this moment, he and his household are led to faith and baptized, experiencing a spiritual liberation as profound as the physical release of the prisoners.
This song captures both the tension and ultimate triumph of this story. Blending the soulful tones of Delta Blues with the uplifting spirit of Gospel Blues, Chains Were Loosened paints a vivid picture of the jailer's transformation. From the tremors of an earthquake to the cleansing waters of baptism, this blues song tells the story of redemption, hope, and faith that overcomes all shackles.
** Original Scripture Text (World English Bible - Acts 16:25-34)
25 But about midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
26 Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. Immediately, all the doors were opened, and everyone's chains were loosened.
27 The jailer awoke, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped.
28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, "Don't harm yourself, for we are all here!"

** Lyrics to "Chains Were Loosened"
Verse 1:
Well, it was midnight, the night was so still,
Paul and Silas were prayin', singin' God's will,
In that dark prison cell, where the chains were tight,
They were liftin' their voices to the Lord that night.
(Singin') "Glory to God, we're in Your light!"
Verse 2:
Then the earth began to shake, the walls gave way,
All the chains fell off, and the doors did sway,
The jailer woke up, saw that it was too late,
He drew his sword, thought he'd sealed his fate.
(Singin') "Don't harm yourself, we're here tonight!"
Chorus:
Chains were loosened, the bars came down,
The Spirit's power turned the night around,
From the prison to salvation, the jailer's soul was found,
"Believe in the Lord, and you'll be safe and sound."
Verse 3:
He fell to his knees, trembling on the floor,
"Tell me, what must I do to be restored?"
Paul said, "Believe in Jesus, that's the way,
And you and your household will be saved today."
(Singin') "Believe in the Lord, He's the Savior, the Way!"
Verse 4:
The jailer took 'em home, washed their wounds with care,
That night he was baptized, his heart laid bare,
With his family around, joy filled the room,
He rejoiced in his Savior, the One who broke through.
(Singin') "Rejoice in the Lord, He made you new!"
Chorus:
Chains were loosened, the bars came down,
The Spirit's power turned the night around,
From the prison to salvation, the jailer's soul was found,
"Believe in the Lord, and you'll be safe and sound."
Bridge:
Well, the doors may open, and the chains may fall,
But it's faith in Jesus that saves us all,
From the dark of night to the morning light,
He's the Savior, the Way, the Truth, the Life!
(Singin') "Believe in the Lord, He's the Savior, the Way!"
Outro:
Chains were loosened, the soul was freed,
From a prison of sin, he was finally redeemed,
"Believe in the Lord," that's the gospel call,
The jailer's heart was saved, and it blessed us all.
(Singin') "Believe in the Lord, and you'll be saved today!"
