“O my God, at the end of this day I thank You most heartily for all the graces I have received from You. I am sorry that I have not made better use of them. I am sorry for all the sins I have committed against You. Forgive me, O my God, and graciously protect me this night. Blessed Virgin Mary, my dear heavenly mother, take me under your protection. St. Joseph, my dear Guardian Angel, and all you saints of God, pray for me. Sweet Jesus, have pity on all poor sinners, and save them from hell. Have mercy on the suffering souls in purgatory. Amen.”
"Embracing Life's Challenges with Faith and Humility"
Welcome to today's episode where we delve into the profound wisdom of the saints and scripture, guiding us on how to live a life that not only prepares us for death but enriches our journey here on earth. Today, we'll explore the teachings of St. Rose of Viterbo and Fr. Cajetan Mary de Bergamo, alongside scripture, to understand how adversity and humility shape our spiritual path.

Segment 1: Living Without the Fear of Death
St. Rose of Viterbo once said, "Live so as not to fear death. For those who live well in the world, death is not frightening but sweet and precious." This statement invites us to reflect on our daily lives. How do we live so that death, when it comes, is not a terror but a gentle transition? Living well, in the eyes of St. Rose, means living in grace, love, and service to God and others. It's about embracing every moment with the awareness that each day is a gift, preparing us for eternity.
Segment 2: The Role of Adversity in Spiritual Growth
Fr. Cajetan Mary de Bergamo provides insight into how we can achieve this grace-filled life, especially through adversity. He notes, "It is easier to be humble in adversity than in prosperity, and it is impossible to say how much temporal happiness influences man to be proud. "They are not in the labor men." (Ps. 72:5) Thus the Prophet-King speaks of sinners, and adds: "Therefore pride hath held them fast." (Ps. 72:6). Adversity counterbalances our self-love and prevents its growth, for on the one hand it makes known our frailties to us, the more so when it is unexpected and grievous; and on the other hand, it compels us to turn our thoughts to God, implore His mercy and humble ourselves under His hand, as did the Prophet: "In my affliction I called upon the Lord." (Ps. 17:7). And as one sorrowful, so was I humbled." (Ps. 34:14). Therefore, if we know not how to bear our tribulations with cheerfulness, let us at least endure them with patience and humility." —Fr. Cajetan Mary de Bergamo
This observation touches on a deep truth: adversity often brings us closer to God. When life is easy, we might forget our dependence on divine providence. But in hardship, we're reminded of our human frailty and our need for God's mercy.
Psalm 72:5-6 speaks of the pride that can hold us fast when life is easy: "They are not in the labor men... Therefore pride hath held them fast." Here, the Psalmist warns of the spiritual danger of comfort, where pride can take root. Adversity, however, as Fr. Cajetan explains, acts as a counterbalance to our self-love, pushing us towards humility and reliance on God.
Segment 3: Embracing Humility Through Life's Trials
Reflecting on Psalm 17:7 and 34:14, where the Psalmist cries out in affliction and humbles himself, we see a model for our own response to trials. "In my affliction I called upon the Lord... And as one sorrowful, so was I humbled." These verses remind us that our hardships are not just tests but opportunities for spiritual growth. They call us to patience, humility, and an unwavering trust in God's plan.
Conclusion:
As we conclude today's reflection, let's remember that living without fear of death and embracing humility in adversity are not just spiritual ideals but practical guides for our daily Christian walk. They teach us to see every challenge as a chance to grow closer to God, to humble ourselves, and to live in such a way that death, when it comes, is indeed sweet and precious.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Grant us the grace to live each day in Your love, so that we might face death without fear but with hope. In times of prosperity, keep us humble, and in adversity, draw us closer to You. Let every trial be a step towards You, and every joy a reflection of Your glory. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
Thank you for joining us today. May the insights of St. Rose of Viterbo and Fr. Cajetan Mary de Bergamo, along with the wisdom of the Psalms, guide you in your journey towards a life lived fully in Christ. Until next time, may God bless you and keep you.
