***UPDATE: President Trump signed an executive order aimed at “defending women from [the] gender ideology extremism and restoring biological truth to the federal government.” According to the document, the US recognizes only two sexes, male and female. “These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality,” the order says. The document draws a distinction between sex, which is based on immutable biological characteristics, and “gender identity”, which “reflects a fully internal and subjective sense of self, disconnected from biological reality and sex.”
