Donald Trump Wins 2024 U.S. Presidential Election: A Historic Comeback to the White House
In the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, Donald Trump won a return to the White House, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in a campaign that focused on issues of economic insecurity, border control, and national identity. Trump secured 277 electoral votes, surpassing the 270-vote threshold needed to win, and also won the popular vote with 71,289,102 votes (51%), marking the first time a Republican has done so since 2004. His victory was largely supported by wins in key battleground states, including Florida, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, which solidified his path to victory.
This win marks Trump’s comeback to the presidency after his loss in 2020, making him the second U.S. president, after Grover Cleveland, to serve non-consecutive terms. Trump framed his victory as a "comeback" for America, promising to address issues he attributes to the Biden administration, particularly inflation and immigration. In addition to Trump’s victory, Republicans also took control of the Senate, securing seats in states like Ohio, West Virginia, and Nebraska, while the House of Representatives remained undecided as vote counting continued.
Kamala Harris, despite her historic run as the first Black and Asian American woman nominated for the presidency, fell short. She retained many Democratic-leaning states, especially on the West Coast and Northeast, but was unable to secure the crucial battleground states needed to reach 270 electoral votes. Harris garnered 224 electoral votes and 66,360,291 popular votes (47.5%).
Third-party and independent candidates received minimal support, collectively accounting for about 1.4% of the popular vote. Jill Stein from the Green Party, Robert Kennedy as an Independent, and Chase Oliver from the Libertarian Party each received around 0.4% of the vote, with no electoral votes.
In summary, Donald Trump’s victory highlights the significance of the electoral college in U.S. elections, as he won by capturing key states rather than just the popular vote alone. This election demonstrates the challenges faced by candidates in balancing national appeal with the need to secure critical states, a dynamic that once again played a decisive role in the outcome.
