"More adventure than any bear can bear." Sony Pictures has unveiled their official US trailer for the highly anticipated sequel Paddington in Peru. It opens in the UK next week, but only opening there – it won't be showing in US theaters until January 2025. Continuing the adorable adventures of the Paddington Bear after the beloved Paddington (2014) & Paddington 2 (2017). In this, Paddington and his adopted family – the Browns – decide to visit his Aunt Lucy in Peru, only to end up lost in the Amazon rainforest (inspired by Herzog's Fitzcarraldo?) and stuck up in the Andes mountains. This fun British-Peruvian comedy adventure sequel stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Carla Tous, and Antonio Banderas, plus Olivia Colman as "The Reverend Mother." Plus the voices of Ben Whishaw as Paddington Brown and Imelda Staunton as Aunt Lucy, who I hope has a bigger role. This looks like the kind of goofy adventure movie we could all use right now! Hope it's as good as the other two Paddington movies before. This is the third trailer between the UK trailer + US teaser.

Here's the latest official US trailer (+ poster) for Dougal Wilson's Paddington in Peru, from YouTube:

Paddington in Peru brings Paddington's story to Peru as he returns to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru. Paddington in Peru is directed by English filmmaker Dougal Wilson, making his feature directorial debut after many music videos, short films, and commericals previously. The screenplay is written by Mark Burton, Jon Foster, James Lamont; from a story by Mark Burton, Simon Farnaby, Paul King. Based on characters by Michael Bond. Produced by Rosie Alison and David Heyman. Studiocanal will debut Paddington in Peru in UK cinemas first starting on November 8th, 2024 this fall. Sony will then release the sequel in US theaters on January 17th, 2025 early in the New Year. Does that look super fun?

We were treated to the first trailer for Paddington in Peru in June 2024, before a second trailer landed in October 2024 showing more of baby Paddington who we first saw in Paddington 2.

The third movie will arrive in UK cinemas next week (November 8 to be precise), before landing in US cinemas in January 2025. There's been a shake-up behind the camera and in front of it, but more on those changes in a bit.

The movie started filming in July 2023 in the UK, but due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Rachel Zegler was unable to join production and had to be replaced in the movie (more on that below).

Paddington 3 runtime: How long is Paddington in Peru?
Ahead of its release, Paddington in Peru has been confirmed to run for 106 minutes and 15 seconds, or just over one hour and 46 minutes if you prefer.

That technically makes it the longest Paddington movie to date, but it's only a couple of minutes longer than Paddington 2.

The first Paddington 3 trailer was released by Studiocanal on June 12, 2024.

It revealed the first look at the new characters played by Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas and Carla Tous (more on them all in a bit), as well as Paddington's journey back to Darkest Peru to reunite with Aunt Lucy.

We then were treated to a second trailer on October 4, 2024 which revealed more from the movie, including baby Paddington.

It looks like we'll get a continuation of the opening to Paddington 2 when we saw him rescued from a river by Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo.

Paddington 3 cast: Why is Sally Hawkins not in Paddington 3?
It wouldn't be a Paddington movie without Ben Whishaw as the bear himself, along with Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin as the Brown family.

Sadly, Sally Hawkins has stepped down from her role as Mrs Brown, with Emily Mortimer taking over the role.

"For me it has felt the right time to hand the reins over to another, and one can't get much better than the truly wonderful Emily Mortimer, she is extraordinarily special," said Hawkins.

"She will embody the essence of Mary Brown and yet make it utterly her own. However, I am, and will always be in love with Paddington's world.

"I already greatly miss my on and off-screen family – the experience of making the first two films has truly been some of the best and most creative times I have had in the world of film."

Don't worry, the movie isn't going down the dark route of having a new Mrs Brown due to something happening to Hawkins's version.

"We're not pretending it's anything other than a straight swap," Bonneville explained in October 2024. "There has not been a hideous divorce or anything. Emily just seemed like a perfect fit."

Olivia Colman has joined the cast for the third movie alongside fellow Paddington newcomer Antonio Banderas.

Colman plays the reverend mother who runs the Home for Retired Bears where Aunt Lucy is staying, while Banderas is riverboat captain Hunter Cabot who helps Paddington on his quest to find Aunt Lucy.

Rachel Zegler was initially meant to play Cabot's daughter Gina but, as mentioned above, she was unable to join filming, with newcomer Carla Tous taking over the role.

Imelda Staunton is also back to voice Aunt Lucy, but it's unlikely we'll see Uncle Pastuzo following Michael Gambon's death. It's possible, however, that some archival audio could be used.

We wouldn't be surprised to find the residents of Windsor Gardens making an appearance too, so returns for Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ben Miller, Jessica Hynes and Doctor Who's Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi would not be a surprise.

Likewise, Mr Gruber's antique shop is surely due to feature, which would mean Jim Broadbent reprising his role.

Knuckles McGinty and his fellow prisoners from Paddington 2 may be less likely to appear, but we wouldn't completely rule out finding Brendan Gleeson, Tom Davis and Noah Taylor back for the threequel.

If anything, we'd be a bit disappointed if they didn't appear. The same goes for Hugh Grant's brilliantly devious Phoenix Buchanan, although we might be wishing for too much there.

Behind the scenes, Dougal Wilson has taken over as director from from Paul King, who is an executive producer on the threequel and has written a story alongside Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton, with a screenplay by Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont.

Paddington 3 plot: What will Paddington in Peru be about?
With the first trailer, we now know that Paddington 3 will see Paddington, the Brown family and Mrs Bird head into the Peruvian jungle to find Aunt Lucy, who has gone on a mysterious quest.

What's not clear from the first trailer is who is the villain in this movie. Our money is currently on Olivia Colman's reverend mother, even if she does have a musical number in the movie.

But maybe it's totally different and there's no villain at all for Paddington to give a hard stare to.

"The first film gives us a bit of information about where Paddington came from and how he found his home in London, And then the second story, he almost loses that home, but in doing so consolidates his community in London and his friends," Wilson said of the move to Peru.

"We thought for the third film, it was very appropriate to return to Peru, but this time take his London friends and community with him and have an adventure there and in doing so, fill in some of the missing pieces about what we didn't learn in the first two films."

And if you're worried that this might be the end for Paddington on the big screen, it was confirmed in September 2024 that there's already plans for a fourth movie to mark the character's 70th anniversary in 2028.

Paddington in Peru will be released in UK cinemas on November 8, 2024 and in US cinemas on January 17, 2025.

Development
In June 2016, the then StudioCanal CEO Didier Lupfer stated that the studio was committed to making a third Paddington film.[2] In November 2017, David Heyman told Digital Spy that though the script for a third film had not been developed, discussions about locations, ideas and scenes had already begun.[3] In November 2018, Heyman noted that a third film was likely to happen, but that Paul King would not be back to direct, though he would still be involved in a prominent creative capacity.[4] In February 2021, Paddington 3 officially began development.[5]

In July 2021, StudioCanal announced that Paddington 3 would begin shooting in the first quarter of 2022. The story for the third film was written by King, Simon Farnaby, and Mark Burton, and the screenplay by Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont.[6] The story was influenced by the Werner Herzog films Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo, due to such films showcasing Peru's incredible variety of landscapes, crazy geology, friendly people and its mysterious Inca mythology, with a Peruvian legend underlying the whole plot and the characters donning traditional-looking clothes in the rural Andes despite counting with modern mopeds and mobile phones.[7] In June 2022, the film's title Paddington in Peru and Dougal Wilson as director were announced, with principal photography now set to begin 2023. It is the feature film directorial debut of Wilson, who previously directed commercials and music videos.[8] In February 2023, Paddington voice actor Ben Whishaw stated that he had yet to read a script and was unsure whether development was continuing.[9] By April, the film was confirmed to still be in development.[10]

Casting and filming
In June, it was announced that Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin and Imelda Staunton were set to reprise their roles from the previous films, with Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, Rachel Zegler and Emily Mortimer added to the cast. Mortimer was replacing Sally Hawkins in the role of Mrs. Brown, who she played in the first two films.[11][12]

Filming commenced in the United Kingdom on 24 July as planned,[13] despite reports that it was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[14] The film was also shot in Colombia and Peru. Filming began without Zegler as she had left for the United States to participate in picketing during the strike;[13][15] Carla Tous later took over the role of Gina Cabot, as Zegler was unable to commit due to the strike.[16] Filming was completed in October 2023.[17]

Post-production
Visual effects for the film are provided by Framestore.[18]

Music
The music was composed by Dario Marianelli.[19]

Marketing
In a brand tie-in, Jo Malone released a limited edition Paddington-themed marmalade cologne in early July 2024.[20] A series of Paddington statues were placed across parts of the UK in early October to promote the film.[21][22]

Release
In May 2023, StudioCanal sold a majority of territories including North America to Sony Pictures for distribution. StudioCanal holds the distribution rights for the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Benelux, Australia and New Zealand, while Sony will distribute the film elsewhere except China, Japan and Russia.[23][24] In October 2023, the film was dated for a theatrical release in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2024, by StudioCanal UK, followed by a theatrical release in the United States on 17 January 2025, by Columbia Pictures through Sony Pictures Releasing.[25]

Reception
Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 92% of 24 critics' reviews are positive.[26][27]

Future
During the Brand Licensing Europe 2024 convention in London, StudioCanal CEO Françoise Guyonnet and head of global sales Sissel Henno revealed that Canal+ is already working on a fourth Paddington film and a spin-off television series, given their focus to "turn a heritage brand into a global phenomenon" by delving deeper into the "ongoing journey of Paddington from a classic character to a worldwide cultural phenomenon", estimating the releases of both productions around 2027 and 2028, where the franchise would have its 70th anniversary. They also announced that by the end of 2024 they will be launching the West End theatre production Paddington: The Musical with producer Sonia Freeman, lyricist Tom Fletcher, writer Jessica Swale and director Luke Sheppard.[28]

Everyone’s favorite marmalade-loving British bear, Paddington, is back in the first trailer for “Paddington in Peru.”

The third installment in the series — which lands some seven years after “Paddington 2” — is set to release on Jan. 17, 2025, in the U.S. by Sony under its Columbia Pictures label, about two months after it releases in the United Kingdom on Nov. 8, 2024, with StudioCanal. The logline reads, “Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.”

The trailer, unveiled at a special event in London on Wednesday morning (where marmalade sandwiches were served), sees Paddington — voiced by Ben Whishaw — head back to the South American country of his birth alongside his adoptive London family, where they meet several new characters, including Olivia Colman‘s guitar-wielding nun (who leads the retired bears home) and Antonio Banderas’ swashbuckling boat captain. Hugh Bonneville (who introduced the trailer via a video from the set of “Downton Abbey 3”) returns as Mr. Brown, while Mrs. Brown is this time played by Emily Mortimer, Sally Hawkins having decided to leave the franchise after two films. Julie Walters steps back into the shoes of Mrs. Bird and Imelda Staunton again voices Aunt Lucy.

“The first film gave us a bit of information about where Paddington came from and how he found his home in London, and in then the second story he almost loses that home but in doing he consolidates his community in London and we also find out a little bit more about Paddington’s origins and how he was rescued,” said director Dougal Wilson, speaking at the trailer launch. “So there’s a lot of missing information about what happens before that and we thought for the third film it would be very appropriate for him to return to Peru, but this time taking his London friends and community with him and have an adventure there and, in doing so, fill in some of the missing pieces.”

David Heyman and Rosie Alison produced “Paddington in Peru,” while Paul King, Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, Dan MacRae, Tim Wellspring, Jeffrey Clifford and Naoya Kinoshita, all served as executive producers.

The first two films of the trilogy, which were both directed by Paul King (who later went on to direct “Wonka”), have earned more than $500 million at the global box office.

“Paddington in Peru” is ready to charm you.

The third film in the “Paddington” franchise doesn’t hit theaters until early next year, but a new teaser at least gives you a little taste of the latest installment. Watch the teaser below.

In the brief teaser Paddington (once again voiced by Ben Whishaw) is getting his passport photo taken. Of course, there are all sorts of comical elements like him having a marmalade sandwich underneath his hat and having his face smashed against the camera. It is very cute and sweet and you also get a brief glimpse of him in South America, on a steamer.

This time around “Paddington in Peru” is directed by Dougal Wilson, a music video director who has helmed clips for Coldplay, Basement Jaxx and LCD Soundsystem. Wilson takes over from Paul King, who directed the first two entries (and who has a “story by” credit).

“Paddington in Peru” stars Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer (replacing Sally Hawkins in the role of Mrs. Brown), Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton, Carla Tous (taking over for a role earmarked for Rachel Zegler) with Olivia Colman with Antonio Banderas.

The movie, produced by Rosie Alison and executive produced by King, Jeffrey Clifford and Tim Wellspring, based on the children’s book character by Michael Bond. The screenplay is by Mark Burton and Jon Foster and James Lamont, based on a story by King, Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton. StudioCanal who developed the film, is fully financing and will distribute in the UK, France, Germany, Benelux, Poland, Australia and New Zealand as well as through partners in China and Japan.

And while the movie will be coming out in England this Thanksgiving, we’ll have to wait until early 2025 to embrace our favorite bear. Columbia Pictures will distribute in the US, Canada and other key international territories including Latin America.

“Paddington in Peru” opens on January 17, 2025.
Marmalade sandwiches and cups of tea at the ready, people - the first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel Paddington 3 (officially titled Paddington in Peru) has landed.

The two minute teaser kicks off with Paddington getting his passport photo done in a booth at Paddington station (of course), preparing for his adventure across the seas. There's just one slight hiccup, though, as he's told no hats are allowed. As it turns out, Paddington forgot he had a marmalade sandwich on his head - classic!

Paddington and the Brown family are heading to Peru to the Home For Retired Bears to meet Aunt Lucy, but once there they encounter another obstacle: Aunt Lucy has set off on a quest into the wilderness and no one knows where she is. As Paddington tells us, she found him as a cub and so he must now find her. Let the journey to find Aunt Lucy in Peru begin!

The trailer also introduces us to franchise newcomers Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas. We see the former as a nun working at the retirement home, with one scene teasing that Colman will have her own Sound of Music moment as she stands in a field with a guitar. At the world exclusive trailer event attended by GamesRadar+, director Dougal Wilson teased that Colman plays a"fun, singing nun" which already has us excited.

Banderas, meanwhile, plays "a swashbuckling adventurer who buckles swash like no one else" according to Wilson, which we get a glimpse of in the footage as he welcomes the Brown family upon reaching Peru.

The teaser should ease any fears fans have regarding the change of director helming this next chapter. Whilst filmmaker Paul King directed the previous two installments, he was too busy bringing magic to our screens with Wonka (although he remains on-board here as producer).

This time, Wilson (who is arguably best known for his work making several John Lewis Christmas adverts) is behind the camera. Perhaps bring the tissues for this threequel, then.

Paddington in Peru marks his feature directorial debut, with Wilson telling the audience that whilst at first he was "excited and flattered" upon being approached to helm this threequel, that "soon gave way to terror as the first two films set a high bar to follow".

As heard in the footage, Ben Whishaw is back as the marmalade-loving bear whilst the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, and Imelda Staunton (the voice of Aunt Lucy) return too.

They will be joined by newbies Banderas, Colman, and Emily Mortimer, with the latter taking over from actor Sally Hawkins to portray Mary Brown. With the film releasing later this year on British shores, it won't be long until we find out exactly what they bring to the beloved series.
