An elderly, blind, and deaf dog fell into a canal but was swiftly rescued by an officer patrolling the area, according to the Clearwater Police Department (CPD).

On October 4, after Hurricane Helene and in the wake of Hurricane Milton, Sgt. Mahoney was on patrol of the Island Estates neighborhood when she saw a dog that had fallen into the canal and was struggling to stay afloat.

Police say that the elderly dog had serious impairments, including blindness and deafness. These impairments, and the recent hurricane, greatly increased the danger of the dog being swept out into the Gulf of Mexico.

According to a CPD, Sgt. Mahoney was able to grab a pole and bring the dog safely to shore.

"She almost drowned in there," said Sgt. Mahoney in the body cam footage. "I don't know how long she would have lasted."

The footage shows the dog was rescued unharmed and was warmly welcomed by her grateful owners.
