"Dousing" or "witching" for water, also known as water divining, is a traditional method some people use to locate underground water sources. The practice typically involves using a forked stick (often from a tree like willow or hazel), bent rods, or pendulums. The dowser holds these tools loosely and walks over the land, watching for any movement or sensation that might indicate a water source below.
