The interview with North American professor Gabriel Rockhill was by far one of the most interesting since Ottolinatv started, and we can confidently place Rockhill within the tradition of Chomsky, Harvey, and Michael Hudson — in other words, among the great anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist thinkers in the United States.

We talked about everything: from the history of imperialism starting with World War I to who we should hope gets elected to the White House after Tuesday's election.

Rockhill’s perspective is one of the most compelling: truly progressive forces should now, unequivocally, stand with countries currently fighting for their sovereignty and independence from the Empire, aiming for a new multipolar international balance. However, this should be seen not as an end, but as a means — a minimal prerequisite to replace financial and predatory capitalism with a new economic structure that returns to producing prosperity and development for the 99 percent. Financial capitalism and the armed Empire are simply two closely interconnected faces of the same problem. Eliminating one would cause the other to cease as well.

At the same time, these same progressive forces should avoid being seduced by those who, while criticizing financial capitalism and imperialism, would want to throw the baby out with the bathwater and completely eliminate the last 40 years of neoliberalism, even in its progressive and positive aspects, such as the significant achievements in civil rights and the care and attention to internal minorities.

In short, it’s a fully dialectical perspective that both pseudo-progressives and pseudo-populists and anti-system movements should make their own.
