The discovery of penicillin, one of the first and most widely used antibiotics, is a fascinating story that began in 1928 with Alexander Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist. While working at St. Mary's Hospital in London, Fleming returned from a two-week vacation to find that a petri dish he had left exposed had become contaminated with mold. Notably, this mold was later identified as Penicillium notatum.
