Reading of the 1560 Geneva Bible - Day 306 of 366 (Matthew 28; Mark 1-2) Season 2 - "The Resurrection and the Early Miracles of Jesus"
In tonight's reading, we delve into the final chapter of Matthew, which narrates the significant events following the resurrection of Jesus, and the beginning of Mark, where we explore the early revelations of His ministry.
Matthew, Chapter 28
As the sun rose on the first day of the week, two women, Mary Magdalene and another Mary, approached Jesus' tomb to pay their respects. Their somber journey was interrupted by a miraculous event: an angel from heaven descended, causing a great earthquake. The angel rolled away the stone from the entrance of the tomb, revealing its emptiness. With awe and excitement, the angel announced to the women that Jesus had risen, just as He had promised. They were instructed to share this joyous news with His disciples. As they hurried away, filled with both fear and joy, they encountered Jesus Himself, who reassured them and charged them with spreading the word of His resurrection. The chapter concludes with Jesus commanding His disciples to go forth, baptizing and teaching all nations, assuring them of His eternal presence.
Mark, Chapters 1-2
The Gospel of Mark opens with a powerful proclamation, introducing Jesus as the Son of God. It sets the stage for His ministry, heralded by a messenger—the prophet John the Baptist—who prepares the way for the Lord. John’s baptism of repentance ignites a movement, and Jesus comes to be baptized, emerging from the water to receive divine affirmation from God. Following this, Jesus begins His ministry by calling His first disciples and performing miracles that leave towns amazed. His notoriety grows as He heals the sick and drives out unclean spirits.
In the second chapter, Jesus returns to Capernaum, where His reputation has spread. Crowds flock to hear Him teach, filling the house to capacity. Amid the throng, Jesus demonstrates His authority by healing a paralyzed man, showcasing both His miraculous power and deep compassion. This chapter highlights the growing tensions between Jesus and the religious leaders, as they challenge His practices and authority. Through these early acts, Mark emphasizes the transformative impact of Jesus' presence and message, setting the tone for the divine journey that follows.
