In late May, a tragic incident unfolded in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where 14-year-old Sophia Koval is accused of murdering her 79-year-old grandmother, Yevhenia Koval. The incident occurred on May 23rd at their home in Lauderdale Lakes, where Sophia allegedly beat her grandmother to death.
Sophia, charged with second-degree murder, appeared in court with the assistance of a Ukrainian translator. Her mother attended the hearing via Zoom from Ukraine, while her father supported her in person. The court has yet to decide whether Sophia will be tried as an adult.
Witnesses reported a seemingly normal relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter, with neighbors describing Yevhenia as a sweet woman who was always willing to help others. One neighbor remarked on the unexpected nature of this incident, noting that Sophia had been struggling emotionally due to her mother's absence.
The police found Yevhenia with multiple bruises, and her death was ruled a homicide. Reports indicate that Sophia's father had taken away her cell phone as discipline just hours before the alleged assault. Sophia claimed to her father that her grandmother had scratched her, suggesting she acted in self-defense. She recently plead "no contest" in order to be tried in juvenile court. She will serve her sentence in a juvenile, maximum security facility for up to 3yrs, followed by conditional release until she reaches the age of 21. The judge warned that violating any terms of her release could lead her to adult prison with a sentence ranging from 10 to 15 years.
