2024 Election & US Debt Crisis: Echoes of 1930s Gold Policy | The Gold Spot

As the 2024 presidential election draws near, investors face rising economic uncertainty. Neither candidate has seriously addressed the staggering national debt, and both have proposed policies that would require significant spending.

Interestingly, the US has experienced a similarly fraught economic situation, leading to a controversial race. Following the 1929 stock market crash, discontented voters ousted Herbert Hoover to make way for Franklin Roosevelt and his bolder economic policies.

Shortly after taking office, Roosevelt launched the Emergency Banking Act, which effectively removed the dollar from the gold standard and made it illegal for Americans to hold physical gold bullion bars, coins, and certificates. For the first time in history, the USD became a full-blown fiat currency.

The economic repercussions of this momentous legislation are being felt today as presidents on both sides of the aisle continue to use it to justify endless printing and spending. The resulting dollar weakness encourages global de-dollarization as countries view the dollar as a risk.
