As many as 400 people are feared dead after once-in-a-generation flooding hit Spain, with the southeast of the country braced for yet more heavy rain.
Some 158 people are known to have died in the flash floods and more than 250 are missing in the Valencia province. Hundreds of troops have joined the search for survivors and bodies.
Several areas of Valencia and Castellón, as well as the south of Tarragona, are under an orange warning from Aemet, Spain’s meteorological agency.
If the death toll keeps rising it could be Europe’s worst storm disaster in more than half a century. Floods on the Continent killed more than 240 people in 2021, mostly in Germany and Belgium, and in 1967 flooding around Lisbon killed an estimated 500.
