Reading of the 1560 Geneva Bible - Day 305 of 366 (Matthew 26-27) Season 2 - "The Betrayal and the Crucifixion: The Final Hours of Jesus"

In tonight's reading, we delve into the dramatic final moments of Jesus Christ's earthly ministry, culminating in betrayal, injustice, and an ultimate sacrifice.

Chapter 26: The Coming Betrayal

As the Passover approaches, Jesus reveals to His disciples the foreboding news of His impending arrest and crucifixion. While this weighs heavily on Him, He also faces betrayal from one of His closest confidants, Judas Iscariot, who colludes with the religious leaders for thirty pieces of silver. As they gather for the Last Supper, Jesus shares a poignant meal with His disciples, instituting the Lord's Supper and foretells Peter's denial. The tension escalates as they move to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus agonizes in prayer, fully aware of the suffering that awaits Him. Despite His anticipation of anguish, His disciples struggle to stay awake, highlighting their human frailty. Soon after, Judas arrives with a crowd of soldiers, betraying Jesus with a kiss, leading to His arrest. The chapter concludes with Peter's bold yet futile attempt to defend Jesus, resulting in his fear-fueled denial of knowing Him.

Chapter 27: The Trial and Crucifixion

With the dawn, the chief priests and elders gather, united in their plot against Jesus. They conspire to put Him to death and deliver Him to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. After being falsely accused and interrogated, Jesus stands mute before His accusers. Pilate offers the crowd a choice between releasing Jesus and Barabbas, a notorious criminal, but the crowd, swayed by the religious leaders, chooses Barabbas, condemning Jesus to crucifixion. Mocked and beaten, Jesus is adorned with a crown of thorns and led away to Golgotha. As He is crucified, the sky darkens, and the earth trembles, signifying the gravity of this event. People witness His final breath, and a Roman centurion recognizes Him as the Son of God, even as the temple veil is torn in two, symbolizing the new covenant between God and humanity. The chapter closes with the burial of Jesus, as His followers grapple with the enormity of what has just transpired.
