The New York Yankees have a storied history that began in 1903 when Frank J. Farrell and William Stephen Devery purchased an American League club in New York City. Initially known as the "Highlanders," the team played at Hilltop Park. In 1913, the team moved to the Polo Grounds and began to be referred to as the "Yankees," a name that was more succinct and easier for newspaper headlines. The name change was solidified when they moved to their new stadium in 1923, which became known as Yankee Stadium. The Yankees' rise to prominence truly began with the acquisition of Babe Ruth in 1920, leading to their first World Series championship in 1923.
