'The History of Mr Polly' (1910) by H G Wells
'The History of Mr. Polly' is a comedic novel about Alfred Polly, a man trapped in the monotony of small-town life and a failing marriage. Dissatisfied with his dull job as a draper and feeling unfulfilled, Mr. Polly longs for adventure and purpose. After an impulsive attempt to escape his unhappy life by setting his shop on fire, he accidentally burns it down and inherits enough money to make a fresh start.
He eventually becomes a handyman at a countryside inn, finding contentment in his new, simpler life and even becoming a local hero when he stands up to a bullying antagonist. The novel humorously captures themes of self-discovery, the quest for happiness, and rebellion against societal expectations, reflecting Wells's wit and insight into human nature. Mr. Polly’s journey from despair to self-acceptance is ultimately uplifting, as he learns to embrace the freedom of living authentically, away from the constraints of his old life.
