The Spirit of Fear

There is an aspect of fear that is a God-given emotion that serves as a restraint against harm and danger. For instance, we should be afraid to cross a street that is busy with traffic. This degree of being afraid is a proper restraint against personal harm. However, if we are afraid to cross the same street when there is no traffic, or when the street is closed, we are being influenced by a spirit of fear.

This kind of fear is a consequence of being separated from God, and it is one of Satan’s most effective weapons used against us. The first undesirable emotions that Adam and Eve experienced after their sin in the Garden of Eden were fear, shame, and guilt.
