A task force assembled from elements of 2nd Battalion, Chernarus 4th Separate Light Mountain Rifle Brigade was ordered to march on the village of Pogorevka in Chernarus, the objective of an enemy attack and attempt to capture the village.

The tactical plan for the defense of Pogorevka was for three light rifle squads to deploy in defensive positions in town, with Command Squad to occupy a position on the northwest corner of the village.

Attacks began immediately with enemy technicals attempting to breach our defensive perimeter, but which were driven away or were destroyed by our counterfire. Enemy infantry attacks came from the north through the village of Rogovo, included Russian infantry, Serbian infantry attacking from the northwest and Serbian infantry attacking from the north.

Those attacks were stopped by the combination of artillery fire and by a counterattack by 2nd Squad. But the attacks kept coming, with two enemy T-55 tanks, one BMP, and one T-34 tank. Friendly reinforcements were rushed to the area of operation which included seven infantry carried aboard a T-34 tank. The friendly T-34 was deployed west of the main north-south road.

Ordinarily a T-34 tank versus most any heavy armor has a good prospect of successfully defending its position, but for four heavy tracked vehicles the friendly T-34 was destroyed. During these tank versus tank fights, enemy continued to close in from the north and from the northwest along with technicals making the task force's position untenable.

Commander ordered the task force to retreat from town south as enemy forces overran Pogorevka. The task force retreated from town in good order, covered by Scout 1 BRDM.

Losses were heavy. 3rd Squad was wiped out by friendly fire from a Sukhoi ground interdiction fighter. 2nd Squad lost five and 4th Squad lost six. Command squad including the commander lost one. Scout 2 was damaged and abandoned. Reinforcing Tank 1 T-34 was destroyed.

Field counts of enemy losses included no fewer than nine technicals, three UAVs, one T-34 tank, one T-55 tank.

The defensive engagement at Pogorevka could easily be classified as a loss, since the objective for the task force was to hold the town and prevent its capture by separatist forces. All this happened, except the friendly forces caused a great deal of havoc and damage. Whatever enemy remnants entered the town were severely damaged from combat from friendly forces.
