Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra was composed in 1932 on commission from Winnaretta Singer, daughter of the sewing machine magnate who had become the Marquise de Polignac. Poulenc was a frequent guest at Palazzo Contarini Polignac on the Grand Canal. In 1932 Maurice Ravel had recently completed his two piano concertos (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra and Concerto for Piano for the Left Hand), the first of which Poulenc certainly took inspiration from for this work. Performed for the first time in Venice in the same year, as part of the Biennale Contemporary Music Festival – the composer himself as soloist together with Jacques Février, for whom the composition had been conceived.
