Eggplants Growing In Our Garden - Several Varieties We've Grown In The Past

We've grown about 6 or 8 types of eggplants. In this video, you will see several types growing in our garden, and also some that have been harvested.
Starting Seeds: Begin by planting eggplant seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. They love warmth, so keeping them in a sunny spot or under grow lights helps.
Transplanting: Once the seedlings have a few true leaves and the weather has warmed up (both the soil and air temperatures), you can transplant them outside. They thrive in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Make sure to space them about 18-24 inches apart to give each plant plenty of room to grow.
Soil and Watering: Eggplants love rich soil, so mix in compost or a balanced fertilizer before planting. They need consistent moisture, but don’t let them sit in water. A good soak once or twice a week, depending on the weather, usually does the trick.
Caring for Plants: Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and keep the weeds down. Eggplants can be heavy, so staking or using cages will support their growth. Watch for pests like aphids and flea beetles, and use organic methods to control them if they show up.
Harvesting: Eggplants are ready to harvest when they're firm and glossy. The size can vary depending on the variety, but don't let them overripe, as they can become bitter and seedy. Use sharp scissors or pruners to cut them off the plant, leaving a bit of the stem attached.
