Horrific Freefall into the Deepest Ocean
Air France Flight 447 is a crash incident involving an Airbus A330-203 that was on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The aircraft disappeared from radar screens on June 1, 2009, with 228 people on board. Investigators were unable to determine the exact cause, but the possibility of icing on the airspeed sensors was considered.

After leaving Rio, the aircraft sent automated messages indicating problems before losing contact. Search operations began after the incident, and some debris and passenger bodies were recovered. Investigations faced challenges due to the lack of eyewitnesses and the loss of the black box, which was recovered later.

The final report pointed to a malfunction of the pitot tubes and the pilots' failure to recognize the malfunction. The incident is considered one of the worst aviation disasters in Air France history, described as the worst accident in French aviation since 2001.

After several flights, the aircraft had completed 18,870 flight hours before the incident. It was noted that human error and a lack of systems to assist in flight management contributed to the accident. An oil slick was found in the Atlantic Ocean, indicating the possible crash site.
