#OnThisDate October 28, 1886 - Liberty’s Beacon
The Statue Of Liberty — “Liberty Enlightening The World” — Was Formally Dedicated In New York Harbor, A Monumental Gift From France To Commemorate The Franco-American Alliance During The American Revolution.
Conceived By French Historian Edouard De Laboulaye And Sculpted By Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, The Statue Embodied Aspirations For Freedom And Democracy Shared By Both Nations.
Standing 151 Feet Tall On Liberty Island (Formerly Bedloe’s Island), It Towers Over The Entrance To New York Harbor As A Symbol Of Liberty.
The Statue’s Framework Was Ingeniously Engineered By Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, Later Famed For His Parisian Tower.
President Grover Cleveland Presided Over The Dedication Ceremony, Which Was Attended By Dignitaries From Both Countries And Watched By New Yorkers From A Flotilla Of Ships In The Harbor.
In His Address, Cleveland Lauded The Statue As A “Mighty Woman With A Torch” Symbolizing Freedom’s Light Amid The Darkness Of Oppression.
The Statue's Journey Had Begun In France, Where It Was Constructed And Then Shipped In 214 Crates Across The Atlantic.
Assembly Was Completed In New York, With The Last Rivet Installed Just Before The Dedication.
In 1903, Emma Lazarus’s Poem, “The New Colossus,” Was Inscribed On A Bronze Plaque At Its Pedestal, Welcoming Immigrants To American Shores With The Words, “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses Yearning To Breathe Free.”
Since Its Dedication, The Statue Has Served Not Only As A Greeting To Millions Of Immigrants But Also As A Lasting Emblem Of Democracy And Hope.
The Statue Of Liberty’s Dedication Cemented It As An Iconic American Symbol And An Enduring Testament To The Values Shared Between France And The United States.
