U.S. President Joe Biden said Saturday he hoped there would be no further escalation after Israel launched a round of strikes on Iranian military targets, in retaliation for an attack earlier in the month by Iran.

“It looks like they didn’t hit anything other than military targets. My hope is this is the end,” he said while on route to Pittsburgh for a campaign rally in support of vice Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed Biden’s calls for de-escalation, urging “restraint” from both Israel and Iran.

Israel’s bombardment appeared to spare Iran’s most sensitive oil and nuclear facilities. Iran’s foreign ministry issued a statement afterward stating that it has a right to self-defence.
