SIG Sauer has a storied history in military small arms development. Particularly in the category of assault rifles. Or, in the case of the US civilian market, "modern sporting rifles".

One such example of SIG Sauer's race to develop the next best rifle comes in the form of the Sig Sauer 556xi Russian. This version, of course, is chambered in 7.62x39mm and feeds from AK-47 pattern magazines. The 556xi is the younger cousin of the SIG 556, which itself descended from the classic SIG SG 550. The 556xi design was introduced in 2014 and proved to be a commercial failure and ultimately was replaced by SIG Sauer's MCX design which has seen great success in both the military and civilian markets.
