Second Session
This pastel drawing ‘Jelco – 22-10-24 – 2’ is the second one of a new series of live drawing events. Under the flag of Kunstgenootschap Vlietstreek (Art Society Vlietstreek) my colleague Hélène and me thend to organize these. Summer season is over. Everybody is back from vacation or whatever people do when the sun shines. That would be sketching and painting for me; no rest for the wicked. Anyway, I am particularly glad these sessions started again. There is just this atmosphere of people together that proves to be conducive to good results. Surely, I can hire a model any time I want to and once in a while I do. However, the presence of multiple participants cannot be underestimated. Especially the possibility of deliberating on the model’s poses and seeing what the other does, is very stimulating. There are for example poses suggested by others you couldn’t have thought of.
Pythagorean Theorem
All-in all reason enough to kickstart these events and we planned all sessions until June 2025. After the first session of this evening I felt confident to take it easy. Therefor I took all the time in the world to measure things out properly for Jelco’s slanted position. These diagonally aligned poses can prove to be very troublesome. This has something to do with the Pythagorean theorem. You can calculate the slanted angle by measuring the horizontal and vertical sides of the triangle. My theory is that everybody as a built-in feeling for horizontals and verticals. You can easily spot a painting that’s not hanging straight. But by how many degrees out of the plumb? That’s the reason I always want to find the proportions of a perfect square in a model first and mark these on paper. the light on the model led me further from there.
