We’re Back Again

This pastel drawing ‘Jelco – 22-10-24 – 1’ is the first drawing of live drawing events this season. The Kunstgenootschap Vlietstreek (Art Society Vlietstreek) of which I am a member organizes these events. So we were back again in ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam on this beautiful autumn day. It was still warm. Hence, our model didn’t need to put the heater on during the first session that evening. Who was male model Jelco by the way. We already knew him because during the first live model pilot session we had him posing for us. It’s alway nice knowing you’re going to get a good model in advance and what qualities someones has. He is slender and got these wonderful musculature you can get hold of. That’s particularly important during the process of finding forms on paper.

Musclebound

Jelco’s mucles did show more profoundly than our last male model’s last March. I decided to position myself in front of him where the light from the ceiling razored over his torso. Especially muscles like the pectoralis, deltoids and biceps were perfectly lit. Besides that, he sticked his arm out and kept a clenched fist. Well, not the whole time and I already feared his arm would go numb. Nevertheless, I managed to capture the posture in time. That was: one quarter of this face blocked by his fist. Even though later on his posture changed a bit I already finished the arm work. In the end I kept the lower part of his body rather simple, such as his gender. Therefor, the stress is on the upper part of the body, executed in a rather sketchy style. But hey, that’s what live drawing is all about!
