The tradition of burning stones is one of the important traditions in Papua in the form of a cooking ritual together with residents of the same village with the aim of giving thanks, staying in touch (gathering relatives and relatives, welcoming happiness (birth, traditional marriage, coronation of tribal chief), or to gather soldiers to fight. The tradition of Burning Batu is generally carried out by inland/mountain tribes, such as in the Baliem Valley, Paniai, Nabire, Central Mountains, Bintang Mountains, Jayawijaya, Dekai, Yahukimo etc.

It is called Bakar Batu because the stones are actually burned until they are red hot, then piled on top of the food to be cooked. However, in each place/tribe, it is called by various names, for example Gapiia (Paniai), Kit Oba Isogoa (Wamena), or Barapen (Jayawijaya).
