#314 | DEFUNDED! | The Political Spotlight

Well, the Muncie, Indiana, City Council finally passed a budget for the year 2025. However, it differs from what Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour had in mind!

In a 6 - 3 vote down party lines, the Council voted to pass an AMENDED 2025 Budget for the City of Muncie, with $2,069,370.00 in reductions from the original budget the Mayor's Administration presented to the Council in September.

In other BIG NEWS - along with the reductions, the Council also voted 6 to 3 (along party lines) to DEFUND 3 MAJOR POSITIONS within the Mayor's Administration for 2025! Those three positions are:

- The Deputy Mayor, Richard Ivy...

- The Deputy Controller, Matt Wagley...

- & The Communications Director, Amber Greene...

After the vote, Councilors Nora Powell (the Finance Committee Chair) and Jerry Dishman (the Council President) read harshly worded statements directed at the Mayor. At the end of both statements, members of the City's AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees) Union clapped and cheered.

Will the Council's decision stand, or will the Mayor VETO the Council's vote? Only time will tell!

For those who might not be familiar, the Mayor has the power to VETO any action taken by the Council. Then, it would fall back to the Council, which would have to override that VETO with a two-thirds vote (6 out of 9 Councilors). Of course, all of this has to be done within a time crunch! For the record, this Mayor has only used his VETO power once before. Will this action stand? Will the Mayor VETO it? Time will tell!
