Why do short films matter?

To an outsider looking in, it must be weird that short films play such a prominent role in the film industry. Especially film festivals, given that the public appetite for a short film is close to zero. But, here’s why short films are important. To a filmmaker, a short film is a resume. It showcases your work and what you’re capable of doing, but at a smaller scale. So, to a film producer or studio, they can see how your visions manifest and how effective you are at creating them, but at a level that’s accessible to a filmmaker who has to self-fund or self-fundraise in order to make their project.
