Researchers Find Millions Of Tons Of Lithium In Arkansas
Millions of tons of Lithium deposits have been found in Arkansas, according to a new federal study that claims the state has enough lithium to meet the 2030 global demand for the product used in car batteries, nine times over.
In fact, researchers say there’s between 5 and 19 million tons of lithium located in a geological area known as the Smackover Formation in southwestern Arkansas.
The Smackover formation extends under parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.
As of now, the U.S. relies on imports for more than 25% of its lithium – that’s produced in South America and Australia – then the majority of which is processed in China.
However researchers are saying they need to figure out how much of the Lithium is recoverable based on newer methods of extracting lithium from brines.
