History of the M60 Machinegun and the terrifying job of machinegunners who carried it during the Vietnam War. The M60 earned the nickname "The Pig" for good reason. Weighing 23lbs unloaded and each belt of 100rds weighed another 6lbs. The M60 was heavy and cumbersome, but fired the 7.62x51mm NATO round that surpassed the M16's 5.56x45mm in distance, barrier penetration and stopping power. The job of the men who carried the M60 was exhausting and dangerous, as the Vietcong soon discovered that killing the men who carried it greatly increased their chances of victory in a battle.
