The Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division released video footage of a Montgomery County police officer's fatal shooting of an armed assault suspect.

The incident happened on September 21 on the 3400 block of Janet Road in Wheaton, Md. An officer arrived on the scene around 7:49 p.m. and found a man in the yard armed with an object, according to officials. The officer gave multiple commands, but the man did not comply.

The newly released body footage shows a group of civilians standing across the street from 31-year-old Melvin Chavez-Paz, who appeared to be holding a knife. The officer, identified as Corporal Cody Hobbs, repeatedly instructed Chavez-Paz to "drop the knife" before shots were fired.

Police said Chavez-Paz walked toward the officer and the group of civilians before being shot. A grill fork was recovered near his body, according to authorities.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Corporal Hobbs, a 12-year veteran of the force, is assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau.

The Attorney General's Office is continuing its investigation into the shooting.

CASA said they are working with Chavez-Paz's family and shared the following statement with 7News in September:

“CASA is supporting the Chavez family with direct services and humanitarian support after Saturday’s incident. Their main focus is the safe return of their nephew to ensure a dignified burial based on his mother's wishes. The family asks that they not be connected during their time of grief.”
