Scythians were nomadic people known from as early as the 9th century BC. They were renowned for their horse-riding abilities, which allowed them to traverse and dominate vast territories across Eurasia.
Their elites were buried with rich grave goods in kurgans, mound-like tombs with underground chambers. According to ancient historian Herodotus, their burial ceremonies involved rather gruesome practices. Recent discoveries at a Scythian royal tomb, Tunnug 1, in southern Siberia shed light on these dark rituals.
