A man armed with a machete and metal pipe was fatally shot by a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy on Friday morning, July 19, authorities said.

At 7:28 a.m., deputies were called to the area of 34th Street and Crestmore Road in Jurupa Valley to assist Riverside County parks rangers with a clean-up in the Santa Ana River bottom. The Rangers had already encountered the man, armed with an unknown object, and notified deputies upon their arrival.

The deputies demanded he drop the machete and metal pipe, but he did not comply, they said. They used a “less lethal device” in an attempt to disarm the man, but were unsuccessful. The sheriff’s department declined to identify the device.

The armed man “continued to behave erratic and assaultive,” and was shot by a deputy, according to a news release. Deputies provided medical aid until the paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
