26.03.2024 #nio500 - The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR) is an elite U.S. Army special operations force that provides helicopter aviation support. Known as the "Night Stalkers," they conduct covert night attack, assault and reconnaissance missions.
Based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the 160th SOAR consists of highly skilled Army aviators, crew chiefs and support soldiers who undergo grueling training. They specialize in flying helicopters like the MH-47 Chinook, MH-60 Black Hawk and AH-6 Little Bird at night, high speeds and low altitudes.
Formed after the failed 1980 Iran hostage rescue attempt, the 160th first saw combat in the 1983 Grenada invasion. They've played vital roles in major operations like Just Cause in Panama, Desert Storm, the Battle of Mogadishu, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Night Stalkers have distinguished themselves in numerous high-risk missions, including killing terrorist leaders, hostage rescues, inserting special operations forces behind enemy lines, and providing aerial firepower. Their daring feats span conflicts like the Iran-Iraq War, War in Afghanistan, Iraq War and the War on Terror.
