Netflix has announced the release date for its new dark comedy “No Good Deed” — starring Lisa Kudrow — and has unveiled its first-look teaser. The eight-episode series, from “Dead to Me” creator Liz Feldman, will premiere on Dec. 12.
“When Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) and Paul (Ray Romano) decide to move on from their empty nest to forge a new life, they list their gorgeous 1920s Spanish-style villa located in one the most desirable neighborhoods in Los Angeles — and the real estate frenzy begins,” reads the show’s logline. “Multiple families all race to buy what they believe to be their dream house, convinced it will fix all of their very different problems. But as Lydia and Paul know all too well, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a true nightmare. As they struggle to hide the dark and dangerous secrets that linger inside their longtime home, Paul and Lydia begin to realize that the only way they’ll escape the past is to finally face it.”

The promo kicks off with an open house being held by “Raleigh Real Estate,” in what looks to be a spacious Los Angeles home that is easily worth $3 million or more. In walks a character played by Linda Cardellini, no longer dead to us, while Luke Wilson’s character — in shades and a cap — writes “John Smith” as his name on the sign-in sheet.

Additional characters played by the likes of Abbi Jacobson and Poppy Liu scout the property, their jaws agape at the home’s classic features. (This house might go for more than $3 million. Unless it’s next to a meat packing plant in Vernon? But the logline says “one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Los Angeles,” so given the historic nature of the home, it’s gotta be Hancock Park.)
We see Denis Leary staring at a hidden camera… and then discover that homeowners Lydia and Paul are spying on their own open house via an iPhone app. The couple is hiding in one of the bedrooms, watching the feed, when someone startles them by trying to open the door. The trailer then flips to a quick frenzy of clips, as things get progressively more violent: Shots in quick succession of a hand being placed dangerously close to a table saw, someone unwrapping a gun and then, what appears to be a dead body.
“It’s a little darker than I was expecting,” Liu’s character says to Jacobson’s character — and of course, they could be referring to both the house and the show itself.
The series will feature an eight-episode slate of 30 minutes each. Series creator Feldman serves as showrunner, director and executive producer. Silver Tree is also executive producer and director; Christie Smith, Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell via Gloria Sanchez Productions are also EPs.
In addition to Kudrow, Romano, Cardellini, Wilson, Leary, Jacobson and Liu, the cast also includes O-T Fagbenle and Teyonah Parris. Guest stars include Matt Rogers, Kate Moennig, Chloe East, Rory Scovel, Wyatt Aubrey, Kevin Alves and Linda Lavin. Feldman, Madie Dhaliwal and Cara DiPaolo, Crystal Jenkins, Kelly Hutchinson, Cara DiPaolo, Bruce Eric Kaplan, Zora Bikangaga and Kelly Hutchinson serve as writers for the show.

Guests stars on the show include Matt Rogers, Rory Scovel, and Linda Lavin. In a Tudum article announcing the show, it was reported that it was inspired by Feldman’s “many late nights during the early pandemic maniacally searching Zillow listings for a way out of my house.”
Character descriptions were also unveiled, with Romano’s reading, “Paul Morgan, a stressed and flat-broke contractor desperate to retire, pay off his debts, and escape LA. He thinks selling his beautiful Los Feliz home is the solution to all his and his wife Lydia’s problems, but his past mistakes will continue to haunt him.”
Kudrow’s reads, “Paul’s wife, Lydia Morgan, a highly talented (and highly strung) former concert pianist. Lydia is devoted to Paul, and she’s a loving, though flawed, mother to their two children. She is distraught by the idea of selling their Los Feliz home, a place filled with happy memories and dark secrets.”

Ferrell and his production partner Jessica Elbaum produced Feldman’s previous Netflix series “Dead to Me,” which starred “No Good Deed” actress Cardellini. Netflix has just unveiled the first teaser trailer for their latest dark comedy, No Good Deed, and it looks like a dark and deliciously good time. Created by Dead to Me mastermind Liz Feldman, the series stars Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano as Lydia and Paul, a couple on the verge of moving out of their picturesque 1920s Spanish-style villa in one of Los Angeles’ most sought-after neighborhoods but, wouldn't you know it, their plans to leave their empty nest behind turns a lot more complicated and sinister when they list it for sale, setting off an utterly chaotic real estate frenzy.
As multiple families race to secure the house they believe will solve all their problems, it turns out that Lydia and Paul are keeping some dark secrets about their house, and they would really prefer it if nobody found out about them. The tension starts to ratchet up more and more as these secrets threaten to unravel, and Lydia and Paul realize the only way out of their past is to face it head-on. With what looks like a great blend of dark comedy and suspense, the show looks like it'll take viewers on a fabulous exploration into how even the most beautiful homes can hide the darkest and ugliest secrets deep down within.
Who Else Is in the Cast of 'No Good Deed'?
The series also features a banging ensemble cast in addition to Kudrow and Romano, including the likes of Linda Cardellini, O-T Fagbenle, Abbi Jacobson, Denis Leary, Poppy Liu, Teyonah Parris, Luke Wilson, and guest stars like Matt Rogers, Chloe East, and Kate Moennig. Following the cancellation of Dead to Me, Feldman released a statement explaining the inspiration behind No Good Deed.
“'No Good Deed' was inspired by my many late nights during the early pandemic maniacally searching Zillow listings for a way out of my house. I'm endlessly grateful to Netflix for being such a supportive creative home and for continuing to allow me to turn my crippling anxiety into entertainment.”

The real estate market is killer — and perhaps in more ways than one on “No Good Deed.” The new series, from “Dead to Me” creator Liz Feldman, will premiere with all eight episodes on Thursday, Dec. 12, Netflix revealed Monday, along with a teaser.
“No Good Deed” stars Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow as empty-nesters Paul and Lydia, respectively, who are selling their 1920s Spanish-style villa in Los Feliz, Calif. The ensemble cast includes Feldman’s “Dead to Me” star Linda Cardellini, along with O-T Fagbenle, Abbi Jacobson, Denis Leary, Poppy Liu, Teyonah Parris, and Luke Wilson. Feldman, who directed two episodes, serves as executive producer alongside Silver Tree, who directed the other six, and Christie Smith, Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell of Gloria Sanchez Productions.
The teaser doesn’t reveal too much, mostly featuring the prospective buyers checking out the spacious abode while Paul and Lydia spy from their hidden camera. But don’t worry, there’s also a shot of a gun, a hand about to meet a table saw, and an ostensible dead body. “It’s kind of like a dark vibe,” Liu’s character notes of the house — and the show?

New listing: A Spanish-style villa in the Los Angeles enclave of Los Feliz, built in the 1920s and located a stone's throw away from Griffith Park, which offers picturesque views of the Hollywood Sign. Notable features: central cooling and heating, original windows and doors, and well-buried secrets soon to be unearthed as the current owners attempt to evade their past.
Selling agent: Liz Feldman, architect of the acclaimed Dead to Me, who has re-teamed with Netflix for a new dark comedy inspired by her late-night pandemic-era Zillow searches. Titled No Good Deed, the eight-episode series with a sprawling ensemble cast follows three different families as they vie to purchase the aforementioned listing put on the market by husband and wife duo Paul and Lydia Morgan, played by Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow.

While Paul — a contractor intent on paying off his debts and getting out of L.A. — believes selling the home will be the solution to his family’s problems, Lydia — a former concert pianist — is distraught by the idea of parting with the abode, a place with joyful memories but dark secrets. “If you've seen Dead to Me, [you know] I'm not afraid for there to be some darkness,” Feldman tells Entertainment Weekly. “This is certainly in the same universe tonally. There's shared trauma that this couple has been through and the truth of it all unfolds throughout the season.”
Elsewhere, the buyers hoping to snag the Morgan home are expectant mother Carla (played by Teyonah Parris) and her husband Dennis (O-T Fagbenle); Leslie (Abbi Jacobson) and her wife Sarah (Poppy Liu); and out-of-work actor JD Campbell (Luke Wilson). They’ll soon learn, however, that dream homes can be a nightmare. The series, says Feldman, is an exploration of just “how far we're willing to go and the lies we’re willing to tell to protect and provide for our families.”

The foundation for the series was laid during production of the third and final season of Dead to Me. “Part of my inspiration was Linda Cardellini,” says Feldman. “She was like, ‘The next part I play, I want her to be the opposite of Judy.’ And I thought, ‘Huh, what would that look like?’ Very often I think about the characters before I even have the general premise.” Enter: Margo, a house flipper who also has her sights set on the Morgan home. Yes, buyers, we’ve got a Dead to Me reunion.

A status seeker intent on obtaining “an exciting and monied life,” Margo is “very good at getting what she wants,” teases Feldman. “We took inspiration from many different types of women. There's a whiff of Housewives in there. I think she'll be recognizable but wholly unique at the same time.”
Also in the families’ orbit: Gwen (Kate Moennig), a developer and Margo’s potential business partner; Greg (Matt Rogers), the realtor handling the Morgan home sale; Denise (Anna Maria Horsford), Dennis’ overbearing mother; Phyllis (Linda Lavin), the Morgan’s over-involved neighbor; and Mikey (Denis Leary), an ex-con dealing with debt and sobriety. “I wanted to populate the show with people that felt real to L.A.,” notes Feldman.

It was Feldman’s own house-hunting journey that ultimately transformed the series blueprint into a full-fledged structure. “I was so sick of looking at our walls when we were on lockdown,” she shares. “We saw over 50 houses, and every time we walked into a new house, there was some deep and really intriguing story behind each family. I realized every house has its secrets.” She also came to the jarring realization that the grueling process truly brings out “the worst in us.”
“I'm really interested in our higher stakes moments in life. I think it's universal that when you really want something, suddenly even your highest morals lower a bit,” she muses. “My wife is the most entirely decent person I've ever met, but even in the buying and selling process, she revealed sides of herself where I was like, really? Ultimately, there's no more important thing in life than your home. And it’s beyond aspirational. It's survival. It really brings out the most primal parts of us that even surprise ourselves.
“There hasn't been a narrative show necessarily about the buying and selling of one house,” adds Feldman. “I just thought it was a pretty compelling foundation.”
No Good Deed hits the market in December, only on Netflix.
Buying a home might be one of the most stressful times in your life. For many, a home is the largest purchase they’ll ever make. So you better believe they’re going to do their research. That’s what we see in the new series, “No Good Deed.”
