The Failure of Civilian Disarmament: When Security Becomes Vulnerable

Civilian disarmament has several disadvantages that directly affect public and individual safety. By taking away people’s right to own and carry weapons, disarmament leaves ordinary citizens in a vulnerable situation, leaving them defenseless against criminals who, regardless of the law, continue to have access to weapons illegally. This creates an imbalance of power, where the population loses the ability to defend itself against immediate threats.

In addition, civil disarmament may not reduce violence as intended, since criminals tend not to follow the rules imposed. Instead, it may result in an increase in crime, as offenders feel more confident in attacking unarmed individuals. This policy often fails to address the real causes of violence, such as poverty, drug trafficking, and lack of opportunity, focusing only on gun control rather than promoting more comprehensive and effective security.
