"You want me to put my name on your show?" Freestyle Digital Media has revealed an official trailer for a comedy film titled Stealing Jokes, a meta comedy about stand up comics getting revenge. This is written and directed by comedian Mike Young, who is also originally from Detroit, and it was filmed in Detroit; this release is timed to his new Rocket Comedy tour this month before hitting VOD in November to watch at home. Comedian Jake Burman and friends head out on tour. After getting stiffed for their pay on their first gig they rob the venue which sets the stage for a hilarious Ocean’s Eleven-esque romp through the comedy underworld. Young says: "I've always wanted to make a film about comedians getting their due. After years opening for Bob Saget and seeing firsthand the global influence of stand-up comedy, I thought what better way to tell the story than through an underdog tale about standup comics." The film stars Jeff Dye, Dustin Ybarra, Ha Ha Davis, Luke Null, and many other comedians you may (or may not) recognize. Have fun.

Here's the official trailer for Mike Young's comedy film Stealing Jokes, direct from FDM's YouTube:

Stealing Jokes Film

Stealing Jokes centers on a comedian and his friends who, after setting out on a comedy tour, get bilked out of their promised fees on the first night. They decide to rob the venue, leading to a heist involving the underworld of the comedy scene. Stealing Jokes is a comedy written and directed by American comedian / indie filmmaker Mike Young, director of the other very tiny indie films My Man is a Loser and A Stand Up Guy previously. Produced by Jeremy Alter and Michael Manasseri. It was filmed mostly in Detroit. THR adds: "The release is timed to the start of Young's Rocket Comedy tour, which launches its 25-city run in Phoenix on October 11th. Young and the roster of comedians will end the tour in Detroit." Freestyle Digital Media will release Stealing Jokes direct-to-VOD starting November 1st, 2024 this fall. Anyone into this?
Over the years director Quentin Tarantino has cemented his love for celluloid films. From refusing to shoot on digital cameras, to using film projectors in his own theatres in Los Angeles, the auteur has left no stone unturned to establish his view of film prints as works of art. And there’s no cinephile in the world who is not envious of his personal film collection. A new feature film from the first-time director Danny Turkiewicz is set to present his own take on the Kill Bill director’s love for cinema in a heist film, Stealing Pulp Fiction, which has announced a release window of early 2025, IndieWire reports.

The movie is billed as a “classic heist film” and a “homage to Tarantino” and film history in general. It follows a group of movie lovers who conspire to steal Tarantino’s original 35mm print of his iconic feature Pulp Fiction. While three friends conspire, their therapist also gets involved in the plan, further complicating things and adding an extra layer of humor to the concept.

What to Expect from ‘Stealing Pulp Fiction’?

The movie stars Jon Rudnitsky, Karan Soni, Cazzie David, Jason Alexander, Taylor Hill, and Oliver Cooper. So fans can expect some amazing performances. Commenting on the nature of the upcoming feature Shayna Weingast, Giant Pictures’ content acquisitions manager said in a statement. “’Stealing Pulp Fiction’ is an electrifying homage not just to the work of Tarantino but to the history of film in general. Danny Turkiewicz’s dazzling and whip-smart vision is a must-see for film buffs and casual moviegoers alike.” Turkiewicz added, "I’m excited for audiences to experience the humor and heart that our cast and crew brought to the screen."

The movie comes from the mind of Turkiewicz and expands on his 2020 short film of the same name. If the short is anything to go by the upcoming film will not shy away from riffing on the many iconic casual conversations that make Pulp Fiction and its characters a classic. In a previous conversation with Collider, Rudnitsky teased a bizarre ride with a completely unchained vision. "It's a very quirky comedy that's like an homage to Tarantino. And it's truly absurd, it might be the craziest thing I've ever done. It is the first time I've ever been on a set where they didn't reel me back at all."

Stealing Pulp Fiction arrives in theatres in early 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates.

On an icy, 19-degree night in St. Louis, comedian Jo Koy was nowhere to be found.

Amid a Midwestern snowstorm, his flight from Los Angeles had to make an emergency landing in Kansas City. While waiting for the comic to arrive, a screen read: “No heckling. You are interrupting the show for everyone. Just don’t do it. Hecklers will be removed from the venue.”

Twenty-five minutes after the 8pm start time for his “Joy Koy World Tour,” the 3,100-seat Stifel Theatre announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience. We are dealing with some inclement weather. The artist will be arriving shortly.” At 9pm, the Tacoma, WA native, Koy, 52, came onstage and was met with thunderous applause of support and a standing ovation.

“Holy shit, right?,” said Koy of the applause. “This big hug that you gave me is all I need, swear to god. Fucking whirlwind, goddamn.”

Popular on Variety
Alluding to his disastrous Golden Globes hosting gig (and the fallout), he said,  “Lot a marshmallows, man. They’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft. I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we fucking laugh at ourselves?” The audience roared with applause, and someone from the audience yelled, “Fuck ‘em!”

Koy said, “I got a feeling none of you motherfuckers watched it, and I’m kinda happy. Oh my god. It feels good to live in this country. We get to say what we want to say. Don’t be apologetic about it at all. Be able to…speak your mind.”

It’s Koy’s speaking his mind that drew the crowd on the cold January night. Amy Thebeau, 45, came from Potosi, MO, to see the show with her cousin, Kayla Weingartner, 40, who came from Sikeston, MO. “We were worried about the ice, but we’re so happy to be here,” said Thebeau. It was their first time seeing Koy live. Thebeau posted on Facebook a few months ago asking if anyone wanted to go to the show with her. And her cousin Kayla commented, “Yes!”

Koy’s relatability is why Thebeau wanted to come to his show. “When you grow up poor in a big family,” she says, “it’s easy to relate to his comedy. It’s what you’re used to—those big family dynamics.” Weingartner says her mother-in-law is “just like Jo’s mom and the stuff she says…I was really sad that him and Chelsea [Handler] broke up.”

After vaguely addressing his hosting the Golden Globes––while never naming the awards ceremony outright––the comic talked about his long journey to make it to the night’s standup show. “We Uber-ed here. We fuckin’ Uber-ed here! It was four and a half hours.” Koy and his team had to make an emergency landing in Kansas City, flying from Los Angeles. “My whole crew, none of them brought parkas. Me? I brought two. You think the snow is CGI? It’s real snow motherfucker. We’re inside of a goddamn snow globe! We should be dead right now––all of us. If not by the plane, then by the snow,” he said, miming slipping on a patch of ice.

Koy joked, “The weather is better in Hollywood, but I’m happy to be in this blizzard. When it rains, it pours.” Dressed in head-to-toe black in a hoodie, black pants, and white sneakers, Koy said, “I have to ask this question, and it’s a serious question: Why do you guys live here? It’s fucking cold! This place should be empty!”

Koy riffed on everything from the weather to cell phones to the military and getting older. He spoke about cultural sensitivity, and oversensitivity –– and its impact. “Here in St. Louis, [you’ve got] people that listen to you, understand you, and understand we’re not all out to attack each other. It’s stupid in LA.” During the show, while speaking with an audience member, Koy replied to someone, “You want me to guess what ethnicity you are? No! I already got in trouble this week!” he laughed.

Clearly enjoying himself, Koy said, “Oh God, this is fun.” The audience thundered with applause. “I haven’t laughed in four days. I’m so happy. You guys make me so happy.”

He shared anecdotes from his childhood, including a stolen Michael Jackson album, the fights his brother would get into, and stories about his stepfather Fred. “Fred is 6’4 from West Virginia. This motherfucker used to eat coal when he was five!”

Koy shared onstage that his stepfather recently died. “Rest in peace. He just passed.” Koy reflected on the importance of taking risks. “Everybody goes through shit. Everybody has a fucked up family. We’re all fucked up. No one’s perfect.” Koy emphasized the importance of failure, saying, “You’re allowed to fail! Fail as much as you can. Just make sure you get the fuck back up,” he said to applause. “Fuck up. Risk. Take a risk. Without any risk, you’re never gonna know if anything’s possible. I’m back, motherfuckers. Take that risk.”

At the show’s end, Koy passed out merch hats to several audience members. “This has been a fun show, you guys. I needed it. This is therapy. You guys, I love you. Thank you so much.”

Koy’s new special comes out on Netflix this year. The “Joy Koy World Tour” runs through May and ends on May 26, 2024, in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Few filmmakers have used their voices and resources to advocate for the continued use of celluloid film than Quentin Tarantino. From his steadfast refusal to shoot on digital cameras to his exclusive use of film projectors at his New Beverly and Vista theaters in Los Angeles, the “Reservoir Dogs” director has made it clear that he views film prints as works of art in and of themselves. His prized film collection is the envy of many cinephiles — to the point where it’s now the subject of a heist film.

IndieWire can exclusively reveal that Giant Pictures has acquired the distribution rights to “Stealing Pulp Fiction,” a new heist comedy from first time director Danny Turkiewicz that follows an ensemble of movie lovers who try to steal Tarantino’s personal print of “Pulp Fiction.” The film, which is set to make its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on October 19, is is adapted from Turkiewicz’s 2020 short film of the same name.

“Giant Pictures has an undeniable love for the history of cinema and a passion for championing new and upcoming directors,” Turkiewicz added. “They also have a willingness to be creative with distribution strategies that a film like ours could benefit from. I’m excited for audiences to experience the humor and heart that our cast and crew brought to the screen.”

“Stealing Pulp Fiction” is set to be released in theaters and on digital platforms in early 2025.

Official US Trailer for Shameik Moore's 'The Gutter' Bowling Comedy
By Alex Billington
The Gutter Trailer
"There is no way I'm gonna let these two bozos take all my glory without a fight!" Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official US trailer for a sports comedy film called The Gutter, made by comedy brothers Isaiah Lester & Yassir Lester. It's set for a US release in November including VOD. This indie bowling satire stars Shameik Moore as a guy who gets a job at the bowling alley's bar only to end up training to become a pro and conquer a bowling champion (played by Sarandon channeling a "Karen"). This plot borrows from the classic Kingpin (make money pro bowling), which for decades has been one of the only bowling comedies to ever exist. The Gutter is an "outrageous and hilarious spin" on sports comedy. Walt is pressured to embrace his bowling talent, sparking backlash from detractors seeking to undermine his sudden pro success. Starring Shameik Moore, Susan Sarandon, D'Arcy Carden, Jay Ellis, Jackée Harry, and Paul Reiser. This premiered at SXSW 2024 earlier this year and will play at the London Film Festival next. It looks good! Just the right vehicle for Shameik Moore's kooky comedy and it's funny to see a boatload of bowling jokes again.

Kooky US Trailer for Quentin Dupieux's Hilarious 'Daaaaaali!' Comedy
By Alex Billington
Daaaaaali! Trailer
"Now it's sublime." Music Box Films has unveiled the official US trailer for the acclaimed film Daaaaaali! from wacky filmmaker Quentin Dupieux (who also premiered his latest film The Second Act in Cannes earlier this year). Quite simple, this brilliantly hilarious comedy is a wild and weird take on the iconic artist Salvador Dalí. It premiered a the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year to uproarious laughter - it was one of my favorite films of the festival. Dupieux's film is sort of about a young journalist who attempts to meet with the iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dalí on several occasions for a documentary. But it never seems to work out. To add to the confusion, multiple actors portray Dali during different scenes in the film. Starring Anaïs Demoustier, Romain Duris, Gilles Lellouche, Edouard Baer, Pio Marmaï, Didier Flamand, and Jonathan Cohen. 🎨 "As Dalí himself said, his personality was probably his greatest masterpiece. My film modestly tells that story," Dupieux explains. I am a HUGE fan of this film, glad it's out soon. It's so hilarious and funky and peculiar. Dupieux's most eccentric characterization that goes further than ever before. Enjoy.

Vertigo Releasing has unveiled the first official trailer for an acclaimed indie romantic comedy remix called Timestalker, made by filmmaker Alice Lowe (of the horror Prevenge before this). This film first premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, and it also played at Fantasia, Locarno, and Edinburgh this year. Some lessons are just too hard to learn in one lifetime... Timestalker stars Alice Lowe as Agnes, Aneurin Barnard, Tanya Reynolds, Jacob Anderson, Kate Dickie, and Nick Frost. Yes! Laugh At This: Beetlejuice Goes on 'Hot Ones' and Argues with Keaton
By Alex Billington
Beetlejuice Hot Ones Video
"Who the hell are you?" Some might know him as... Batman! Warner Bros has dropped in a funny comedy promo for the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel. This highly anticipated Burton follow-up is premiering this week at the Venice Film Festival, then opening in theaters the week after. This promo is a riff on the famous Hot Ones YouTube series, featuring comedian Sean Evans interviewing celebrities while they eat chicken wings with burning hot sauce on them. But this is an unofficial riff - so it's literally just the actor Michael Keaton interviewing the character Betelgeuse, resulting in some extra strange moments. But it isn't long enough! Barely 90 seconds! I'd watch a full 15 minute YouTube with these shenanigans, but I guess they'd need the real Sean Evans from Hot Ones on there. (They did recently get Donald Duck on for real in another Hot Ones promo.) Keaton returns as the miscreant Betelgeuse and Winona Ryder stars again as Lydia, in this horror comedy sequel from maestro director Tim Burton. We've already posted all of the trailers for this movie before. Just a funny promo video to keep a buzz going before it opens in theaters soon. 🌶 Enjoy.

Comedian Jamie Lee Stars in Pregnancy Comedy Film 'Plan B' Trailer
By Alex Billington
Plan B Trailer
"We slept together! Doesn't that mean anything?" Apparently not... Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for Plan B, an indie comedy from filmmaker Brandon Tamburri making his first feature. Not to be confused with Natalie Morales' other pregnancy comedy also called Plan B that's now streaming on Hulu - why call them the same thing? I don't know. This one could get a different title, it doesn't need to be called Plan B at all... When a drunken one night stand with her awkward, weirdo neighbor leaves her pregnant, a woman decides to quickly sleep with a successful businessman and tell him he’s the father of her unborn baby. Comedian / actress Jamie Lee (not Jamie Lee Curtis) stars as Piper & the goofy neighbor she doesn't want is played by Jon Heder of Napoleon Dynamite fame. Poor guy. The ensemble cast includes Shannon Elizabeth, Tom Berenger, Kate Flannery, Michael Lombardi, Vernon Davis, Subhah Agarwal, and Daniel K. Isaac. This looks extra cheesy and cute and funny, but also obviously a direct-to-video film.

Goblin Mayhem in Wacky Canadian Comedy 'Frankie Freako' Trailer
By Alex Billington
Frankie Freako Trailer
"Let's boogie!!" It's time to get Freako!! Shout Studios has debuted the full official trailer for a wacky horror (maybe??) comedy called Frankie Freako, the latest by filmmaker Steven Kostanski behind the other cult classic horror faves Manborg, The Void, and Psycho Goreman. Well this looks off the charts weird! This movie "taps into the nostalgia of Saturday morning cartoons, the charm of old-school puppetry, and gonzo comedy." Workaholic yuppie Conor is in an existential rut until one night he catches a bizarre ad for a party hotline hosted by a strange dancing goblin: Frankie Freako. Could this be just the secret to spice up his boring life? Soon his home is overrun with interdimensional beings that bring chaos to his life and he must figure out how to get rid of them. Frankie Freako stars Conor Sweeney as the dweeb Conor, with Adam Brooks, and Kristy Wordsworth as his wife. Featuring tons of freaky funky goblin puppets galore and so many over-the-top set pieces tossed in. With old school filmmaking vibes. This looks crazy! Reminds me of Gremlins but with more punk-y critters than nasty ones. Everyone really needs to see how wacky this looks.

Rachel Zegler in New Years Eve Party Comedy 'Y2K' Bonkers Trailer
By Alex Billington
Y2K Comedy Trailer
"Bye bye, human race." A24 has unveiled an official trailer for Y2K, a big party comedy marking the feature directorial debut of comedian Kyle Mooney. It's ready for release in theaters in December just before New Years at the end of this year. It premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival to good reviews along with some negative ones, too. Two high school nobodies make the decision to crash the last major celebration before the new millennium on New Year's Eve 1999. The night gets even crazier than they could have ever dreamed when the clock strikes midnight. The hilarious NYE horror comedy stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, and Alicia Silverstone, also featuring The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Durst. Reminds me of Bodies Bodies Bodies at first glance, though it also looks like it'll be as crazy as This is The End. Reviews state "Y2K is totally bonkers and the kind of movie I wish more studios would take risks on." This looks like a fun riff on - what if all the 90s tech went mad (Y2K bug!!) and started killing everyone.

Inside Out 2 Deleted Scene
"The mood swings! That one looks fun." Pixar has revealed a funny look at one of their deleted scenes from Inside Out 2, which is now officially the #1 animated movie at the box office. The Pixar sequel has become a massive worldwide hit, which is especially amazing because it's a wonderful movie that deserves this kind of glory. This sequel to Inside Out (2015) has Riley entering puberty and experiencing new, more complex emotions as a teen. As Riley tries to adapt to her first year as a teenager, her old emotions try to adapt to the possibility of being replaced - with the new set of teen emotions including anxiety (Maya Hawke), envy (Ayo Edebiri), ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). In this clip, director Kelsey Mann explains where the idea came from - we follow Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) as they end up strolling into "Puberty Park" before discovering the Wanted posters with their faces on them. This clip is part of the promo for the Blu-Ray and VOD release of Inside Out 2. As much as I would enjoy seeing it in the movie, it makes sense why they cut it.

The late Robin Williams has been accused of stealing jokes back in the early days of his comedic career in a new comedy tell-all book written by the legendary Budd Friedman. Friedman founded the New York and Los Angeles Improv Comedy Clubs and has seen a lot of things in his 85 years. In addition to ratting out Robin Williams, Friedman devotes an entire chapter to the iconic and polarizing comedian, Andy Kaufman, and dishes on managing Bette Midler as well as witnessing Johnny Carson getting wasted and making out with an 18-year old girl in the backseat of a car.

Many comedians have been accused of joke stealing, but as it turns out, Robin Williams was reportedly notorious for it back when he was for starting out. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Budd Friedman about his book and the author revealed that Richard Lewis and Robert Wuhl both accuse Williams of stealing material in the memoir. Comedian Richard Lewis said, "Some comics hated him for it, but I wasn't one of them." This is not the first time that Robin Williams, who passed away in 2014 has been accused of lifting material from other comedians.

Long before he was an Oscar winner, Robin Williams was known to comics as a major material "sampler." Williams was even alleged to have used other comedians' material on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. One mythical story (or stories) claims that when fellow comics spotted Robin Williams in the audience of a comedy club, they would immediately stop their act to prevent him from writing down and stealing their jokes. While it is unclear if that is actually true, Williams admitted to the thievery on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast back in 2010 and has even referred to the act as "joke sampling."

Robin Williams is definitely not the first comedian to be accused and or admitting to stealing material from fellow comedians. Marlon Wayans has been accused of modifying a Dave Chappelle joke or two, Katt Williams has been accused of lifting material from Curb Your Enthusiasm star and comedian, J.B. Smoove, Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia, Bill Cosby, Denis Leary famously stole from late comedian Bill Hicks, and many more comedians have been outed for lifting material over the years. The internet has really helped crack down on the stealing of material, but it still happens to this day.

While Budd Friedman's accusations about Robin Williams may seem sensational, it is true. Some of the stories may have been embellished over the years, but even Williams himself admitted to it many times over the years. The same can be said about musicians. Led Zeppelin took lyrics from old, and at the time, obscure blues artists and added the word baby to them, which landed them in some legal hot water years after the records were released. Whatever the case may be, the thievery of jokes from other comedians is still happening today. You can check out the rest of the interview with Budd Friedman courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.

As an avid reader of the Goosebumps books, I loved getting to see glimpses of my favorite series. For me, the most exciting part of the trailer is the confirmation that we are getting The Haunted Car story as a part of this season. That is one of my favorite books and I cannot wait to see it brought to life.
