John Kinsel Sr., one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers from World War II, has passed away at the age of 107, as announced by Navajo Nation officials.

Tribal President Buu Nygren has ordered flags on the reservation to be flown at half-staff until October 27 in Kinsel’s honor.

Kinsel, who was born in Cove, Arizona, enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and served as a Code Talker during key battles, including Iwo Jima.

His contributions helped confound Japanese military cryptologists by transmitting crucial messages in the Navajo language.

Following his death, only two Code Talkers remain: Peter MacDonald and Thomas H. Begay, ABC News has reported.
